The average price of a new car in the U.S. is now about $30,000, according to new research from the auto industry’s leading trade association.
The average price in the state of California rose 2.5% to $34,400 in December, according the Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
The association said it will publish its annual report on new vehicle sales on Monday.
The annual report provides an indication of trends and prices across the country.
California, the country’s No. 1 car market, is seeing a surge in luxury cars, with new cars priced more than double those of comparable models.
The average new car sold in December was nearly $40,000.
The California Highway Patrol, the state’s top law enforcement agency, reported on Thursday that it seized 674 luxury cars last month, compared to 591 in December.
