Posted September 14, 2018 11:37:13The road is one of the world’s most famous, winding, and often dangerous, but the only major route for a driver who needs to get to and from work.
On Monday, an expert panel of Australian researchers, academics and engineers published a report in the International Journal of Remote Sensing and Automation (IJRA) about the safety of the Redwoods.
The report’s author, Dr Andrew Marder, said it was the first comprehensive review of the route.
“It is a huge project, the most complicated road in the world, and the main one in Australia, but we have managed to get it done and done well,” he said.
“The problem is that the Redstone has become the poster child for what is wrong with the road system in Australia.”
A recent spate of high-profile crashes on the highway have seen drivers fleeing the area, leaving it open to other traffic.
Dr Marders study found the Red-wood Highway was safer than other roads in Australia when compared to the road network.
“There is a very low risk of serious injury on the Redbone Highway,” he told news.com.au.
“We can’t go on with a project of this magnitude because of safety concerns.
It is a large project, so we need to take time to do the study, look at what we know and look at the data.”
The report analysed the road’s engineering and safety, as well as environmental conditions, to identify safety issues.
“Redstone is one large highway, it is a multi-modal highway and we need all of these factors to work together in a safe way to improve safety on the road,” Dr Mards report concluded.
“To make the Redbones Highway safe, we need the safety infrastructure that we have in place to protect the public from accidents and crashes, the safety measures to deal with drivers who are distracted, and a system that allows the driver to safely navigate the road.”
This is a big project, we cannot just continue with it.
“The study found there were safety problems with the Redroads, including lack of a dedicated road and signage.
Dr Sussan Golland, a lecturer in urban engineering at RMIT University, said the Redfields project had been poorly managed.”
A lot of the work that is done is really focused on improving the road, not the engineering work that needs to be done,” she said.
