In a scathing report, the Supreme Court has ordered the police to hand over all records of traffic violations and complaints, and to conduct an audit of their complaints.
The Supreme Court order, which was made public on Wednesday, comes amid a wave of complaints against highway patrolmen in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district and in other states.
The Supreme Court had in December last year ordered the state’s top cop to take action against those who are not satisfied with the quality of police work.
The apex court also ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to issue a directive for the implementation of the court order, in order to protect public interest.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been keen on cracking down on such complaints.
