In the last week, the country has experienced a major traffic crisis.
From January 1, 2018, all the highways and major roads will be closed except for highways 5 and 11, the national highway 5 and the national freeway 5.
In the first weeks of the new year, traffic will be reduced on all major roads, with the exception of highway 5 which will be open.
The roads that are expected to remain closed will be those which run through the city of Padua.
In a message to citizens, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi wrote: “The country needs to be prepared for the new years rush.
Traffic is going to increase at a much faster rate than normal and the roads that will remain closed are those which are connected to the main arteries of the country.
These roads are the main routes of travel for the people.
We must also be prepared to handle the situation in case the emergency does not last for long.
Please, stay on your feet, stay calm and enjoy the country and its people.”
